Code Search Survey for Doctoral Thesis

Rosalva Eulogia Gallardo is a PhD student in the Department of Informatics in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Science @ UCI. One of the areas of Rosalva’s research interests is Code search and retrieval on the Web and how developers use it.

“Developers are typically searching for code to reuse as-is on a project or as a reference example. This phenomenon has emerged due to the increasing availability and quality of open source and resources on the web. Solutions to this problem will involve more than the simple application of information retrieval techniques or a scaling-up of tools for code search. Instead, new, purpose-built solutions are needed that draw on results from these areas, as well as program comprehension and software reuse.”

If you are a software developer, please fill out this code search survey to contribute in Rosalva’s research.  She can be reached at rgallard at uci dot edu for any questions.

Upcoming SGV.NET User Group Meetings

In September, Denny Cherry (MVP) spoke to San Gabriel Valley user group on the topic of SQL Server Indexing for the .NET Developer. We have a great line up of speakers in coming months including Rob Walling (MVP, SoftwarebyRob.com), Daniel Egan (Microsoft) and Volkan Uzun. I encourage you to attend and get the most out of these informative events. Best of all, they are free!

For our meeting this month, we welcome back our user group co-founder, author, speaker, developer turned successful entrepreneur Rob Walling to discuss “Turning Your Idea into a Software Product”. Our October meeting is with esteemed Rob Walling on Wed, 20th Oct with the topic of “Turning Your Idea Into a Software Product”. Rob is a serial entrepreneur, a great developer and a wonderful friend. He is very well known in the software start-up community and I highly recommend his talk for everyone who is looking to micropreneurship.

In this meeting, Rob Walling takes a detailed look at the nuts and bolts of launching a software product while working full-time. Topics include: our beloved startup myths, what you didn’t know about taking outside investment, the reason most products never launch, the most likely reason your product fail, how to evaluate a product idea without spending money, and the 3 best approaches to marketing your product (hint: none of them are social media).

Rob Walling is a Microsoft MVP in ASP.NET and a ten-year veteran of software entrepreneurship. Rob owns several revenue-generating products including ASP.NET invoicing software DotNetInvoice and runs the first online membership community for developer entrepreneurs and microISVs, called the Micropreneur Academy. Rob blogs to about 10,000 monthly readers at Software by Rob and is the author of numerous technical articles for asp.netPRO magazine, asp101.com, dotnetbips.com and others.
